Midwife in Coogee Area

Midwife services in Sydney’s Coogee Area

For mothers in the Coogee area, Dr Rahul Sen is a practising obstetrician at Royal Hospital for Women and Prince of Wales Private Hospital in nearby Randwick, Sydney. He is glad to share his opinion about the work of  three midwives that work with his practice.

The midwives

Pregnancy is a special but also a vulnerable time in your life – so it’s only natural that you will have a lot of questions and need extra specialist support during your pregnancy. I’m delighted to have a skilled midwife, Michele Simpson on my team.

Michele Simpson and Chantelle du Boisee are part of my midwifery team. Michele Simpson is an experienced and skilled midwife, with whom I have worked for many years at RHW. She will see you for a long (1 hour) consultation at 13-17 weeks, and then for a shorter (30 minute) consultation at 37 weeks, if needed. Chantelle du Boisee provides cover for Michele on some weekends and when she is on leave.

Michele is not present for the birth, however she will try to see you in hospital. Michele will contact you after you leave hospital and, where possible, do one home visit, as well as provide ongoing text message, phone and email support. If you need more help than Michele can provide with a single visit she will put you in touch with someone who can provide more extensive assistance. Michele has a special interest in perinatal mental health, and as part of her antenatal sessions with you she will spend some time with both you and your partner together, and also with you on your own.

Michele is an excellent point of contact if you have additional questions between your visits with me. She can be contacted by email or text message, between the hours of 8am and 9pm most days, and sometimes by phone. Please note that Michele has a busy hospital schedule, and is a wife and mother, in addition to her work with my practice. For that reason she is not contactable on some days, overnight or some weekends. Read more.

Midwives and their complimentary role to obstetrics.

The midwife play a crucial role in antenatal education and support during labour.  They will happily help you to give birth if everything is going well.  If there are complications, or you need an assisted delivery or a caesarean section then it is reassuring and comforting to have a specialist who is known to you to help with your care. The services provided by Obstetrician Dr Rahul Sen include access to experienced midwives who will ensure that you have the support you require for the critical periods of your pregnancy.

What is Obstetrics

Obstetrics is the field of medicine that is concentrated on the entire course of human pregnancy. This course of time spans across the events preceding conception, thorough to childbirth and the postpartum period. Doctors who specialise in this field are called obstetricians.

Why choose an Obstetrician?

The principal reasons for choosing an obstetrician in pregnancy are the high standard of care and continuity of care throughout the pregnancy. No other model of care offers you the doctor of your choice in the hospital of your choice with care starting right from your early pregnancy dating scan to the birth.

Choosing an obstetrician to manage your pregnancy will guarantee a high standard and continuity of care throughout this life event. Your choice of doctor and hospital is critically important. With the services of an obstetrician, you will receive medical care that can commence quite early in the preparation for conception, continuing through to your early pregnancy dating scan. An obstetrician will monitor you and your baby throughout the course of your pregnancy which not only includes the birth of your child, but also through to the your recovery period. Read more.

After Hours and Holiday Cover

I am on call for you 24 hours a day during the week and I always strive to be present for the birth of your baby. However, it is simply not possible to be on call all day every day of the year! No obstetrician can give a 100% guarantee of being present at the birth, although last year I was present for over 96% of births. I generally take two weekends or one long weekend off per month. If I am away I arrange cover with another specialist obstetrician, either Dr Bobby Teoh, Dr Stephen Coogan or Dr Wendy Hawke, who will take excellent care of you.
